New York City’s first municipal airport, Floyd Bennett Field, opened in 1931 — the same year the Empire State Building was completed. Named after the celebrated aviator who piloted the first flight over the North Pole, the field quickly became a hub for record-breaking flights and daring aviation feats. Over the years, it welcomed some of the nation’s most legendary pilots, including Howard Hughes, who landed here after his record-setting round-the-world flight, Amelia Earhart, Wiley Post, and Douglas “Wrong Way” Corrigan, who famously claimed to have accidentally flown to Ireland instead of California.
A favorite of NYC Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, Floyd Bennett Field served the city and nation through some of America’s most challenging times. During the Great Depression, it remained a beacon of progress and ambition. Its iconic hangars were later dedicated to the Naval Air Reserve Base of New York, playing a vital role during World War II. The field also became home to the NYPD’s pioneering aviation unit — the world’s first police air squad — establishing a tradition of service and excellence that continues to inspire us today. In 1972, the National Park Service designated Floyd Bennett Field as part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, preserving its historic structures for future generations.
In 2006, the historic hangars were reimagined as Aviator Sport Club — Brooklyn’s premier sports and events destination. Housed within the soaring ceilings and architectural grandeur of these aviation landmarks, our 175,000-square-foot facility honors the golden age of flight while providing world-class training for the next generation of athletes. From two NHL-sized ice rinks and a championship gymnastics center to outdoor turf fields and a state-of-the-art field house, Aviator Sport Club has become a home for countless memories, friendships, and achievements. We carry forward the spirit of ambition and excellence that defined Floyd Bennett Field — inspiring Brooklyn families to reach new heights.
