Aviator Sports has reached an agreement that will allow its indoor hockey and figure skating programs to continue operating for at least another year, providing stability for athletes and families who rely on the facility.
The arrangement was finalized in late April following weeks of discussions involving the National Park Service and program leadership. As a result, both indoor ice rinks at the Floyd Bennett Field location will remain in use through April 2026.
Community Advocacy Played a Key Role
The decision follows strong advocacy from local residents, parents, and sports participants from Brooklyn and Queens who voiced concerns earlier this spring about the potential loss of indoor athletic programs. Their efforts highlighted the importance of the facility as a long-standing hub for youth sports and community recreation.
Under the new agreement, hockey and figure skating operations are being managed by the current program director, ensuring continuity for athletes during the upcoming seasons.

Ice Programs Resume, Other Facilities Pending
Hockey and figure skating activities have already resumed, allowing athletes to return to regular training and competition schedules. Outdoor amenities at the site — including golf-related activities, farm attractions, and field rentals — also remain available.
At the same time, access to the indoor facility remains limited, and several other programs, such as gymnastics, volleyball, basketball, and climbing activities, have not yet resumed. The National Park Service has indicated that a new proposal process will be launched in the coming months to identify a long-term operator capable of restoring full use of the indoor spaces.
Looking Toward a Long-Term Solution
Local leaders and community representatives have welcomed the agreement as a positive step that preserves critical youth sports programs while longer-term plans are developed. Discussions are expected to continue with the goal of fully reopening and revitalizing all indoor offerings in the future.
For now, the continuation of ice sports ensures that hundreds of young athletes can remain active, train locally, and participate in organized programs at Aviator Sports.
